ShopRite supermarkets have put a stop to the issuance of nylon bags to pack their products across Lagos State, introducing reusable bags instead at the cost of N500 each or an option for customers to bring their own bags.

The new policy is in adherence with the Lagos State Government’s ban on the single use of plastics, which will be enforced from this month, January 2025.

The policy shift was confirmed by a representative of the supermarket, who cited the directives of the Lagos State government at reducing plastic waste. Unlike ShopRite, other major supermarkets in this state, including Spar and Ebeano, have not stopped the bagging of products with nylon. The decision to phase out nylon bags by ShopRite marks compliance with the October 2024 directive emphasizing strict enforcement.

In using the ban, the Lagos State government cited the environmental effects of single-use plastics, which contribute to air pollution, black waterways, and take centuries to decompose. Among those things that the targeted are styrofoam containers and nylon bags while the called-for sustainable practices.

This newly adopted initiative has received commendation and condemnation from Lagosians; while some applauded the initiative for promoting environmental sustainability, others raised concerns over another cost for reusable bags.

The ban on the singular use of plastics is a testament to the state’s commitment to fighting plastic pollution and ensuring eco-friendly habits among Lagosians and business entities.
